Children's Programs

We have so many children's programs planned for this summer! Each week is a different set of programs and activities that we'll be taking around the Columbus community for everyone to enjoy - just show up to your preferred location each week to participate, or check out our Digital Branch if you can't make it in person. We hope we've made it a bit easier to participate in summer programming by bringing the programs to where you are, rather than parents needing to figure out how to get kids to the library.

Excluding holidays, the Library will be at these locations from 9-11:30 for programming. Stay the entire time or just part of it!

Mondays - Fredonia City Park

Tuesday - Chautauqua City Park/Columbus Junction

Wednesday - Columbus City City Park

Thursday - Conesville City Park

Because these are at the park, there are just a few things we wanted to remind everyone of:

1. Be ready to have fun!

2. Please dress accordingly for the weather, apply sunscreen, and bring water.

3. Bathroom facilities are what the parks have to offer.

4. If there is bad weather coming/anticipated, the library may make the decision to cancel programming for that day and will make the best efforts to communicate with parents through social media channels of those cancellations/time changes.

5. Even though we're not at the library, all library policies still apply. The library is providing programming, not childcare, and anyone attending without an adult needs to be able to communicate a phone number of a trusted adult responsible for emergencies and pick up.

Week 1 (May 28-31): Soil

Who would have thought soil would be fun? We sure didn't! We'll make a fun treat that represents the different layers of soil, paint a pot and plant in it, create a container garden, learn about compost, and go on a scavenger hunt.

Week 2 (June 3-7): Recycled Crafts

Using all sorts of old items, we'll make them new again! Make a no sew book bag, a mosaic from beads/buttons/bottle caps, fidget keychains from old shoelaces, recycled cards, and a suncatcher from a water bottle.

Week 3 (June 10-14): Games

This week, we'll be playing all sorts of games with recycled items, like upcycled tinker toys, disc golf, yard sized bananagrams, a nerf challenge course, and more!

Week 4 (June 17-21): Wind

We'll be learning all about wind power! Participate in the wind turbine STEM challenge, make pinwheels, figure how to to make a ball float, and build wind powered cars!

Week 5 (June 24-28): Water

As requested, we'll have a week of water! Learn about the water cycle, paint with water pistols, build a water slide, paint with water colors, and more!

Week 6 (July 1-5): Climate

We'll be learning all about our climate and ways, even as kids, we can help the environment! We'll learn how to make ecobricks and terrariums, do several science experiments, and make comics about saving the planet!

Week 7 (July 8-12): Rainbows

Everyone's favorite weather phenomenon gets its own week! We'll do some watercolor projects, experiment with rainbow spectacles, make air dry mosaics, a nature mandala, and book magnets/stickers/buttons.

Week 8 (July 15-19): Books

And for our final week, we'll do several recycled book projects, like bookmarks, journals, nooks, paper beads, paper bag books, and recycled crayons.

Didn't get a enough summer reading? You can visit all 4 of the Louisa County Libraries at the Louisa County Fair! At 10 am each day, one of libraries will be on the porch of the Youth Center with books and activities!
